Q: [Asking G.NA] What do carry around in your bag?

A: Starting with lip gloss. Necessities. Hand cream, lip balm, lip tint, a diary, pencil case and mints or candy that I can eat when I’m low on sugar…(everybody laughs) Chocolate. Things like these are like energy drinks to me. Gum, jelly, a small mirror, and since I have bangs now, a tail comb. What else is there?
(Then your bag must be fairly large.) I usually like large bags. And… now that I think about it, I don’t carry around a wallet because I don’t have one. About that much? Hand sanitizer. Allowance. Caramel. Passport. I carry around a variety of items. There’s a lot of stuff… There are times I carry around socks too.
(Why socks?) After I wear heels and ride the van, I put on my socks and put my feet up. And in the winter I also carry around sleeping socks. Ah there are also a lot of fan letters. I carry them around to study Korean. I learn a lot of the latest sayings too. There seemed to be a lot of friends who are worse than me at spelling… (laughter) I don’t know if they do this to look cute but they spell ‘it’s gone’ (romanized: up-da) like ‘it’s lost’ (romanized: up-dda). I think to myself that I’m not as stupid as other people… (laughter) There are a lot of people who spell similarly to me. There are a lot of young fans that confuse ‘ㅐ’ and ‘ㅔ’. Although the age group is very different… (laughter) I occasionally carry around a mini-magazine as well, being that I have a keen interest in clothes. I also carry around a tablet PC.

(You should carry around a backpack.)

I really do think I carry around an enormous bag. (says to manager, laughing) Oppa, the bag I carry around is huge, isn’t it?

[Manager says] (nodding) I ask G.NA for something, if I need it.

Q: [Asking G.NA] Unnie the song Black & white is so good. How should we sing it to song it well?

A: You have to sing the song clearly. You have to really chew the lyrics. You can’t do it spilling over. The reason why is that if you do, the song is heard slower than it really is. It becomes really obvious that it’s being slowed down. There’s a big difference when you follow the proper singing method. If you sing it slowly, the person listening will only want to hear it faster. But then again, if you sing it too clearly, it becomes a song you can mess up easily because this song doesn’t have a particular choreography for each verse. For example, when you fool around it comes out as (song) black black black ~ white. It used to originally be black black black and white – but we cut it piece by piece until it fell in with the beat. In the beginning part I sing (song) Black and white, Black and white, you and I are Black and white. I sang it right on the beat. But on the first day of recording, it was on a day my body wasn’t in a good condition so when I went in to record, I sang the same line without really caring about the beat. Of course, it didn’t come out quite as well. Since I was really sick, I said ‘I’m not doing it on purpose…’ and being that I was sick, my words came out slower as well. You just have to be careful about things like that. And ending the song on a high pitch is extremely important. You have to think you’re a rock star and shout it. You have to. You can’t be timid about it. Just open your mouth wide and scream it.

Q: [Asking G.NA] The things you’re most worried about lately?

A: Rather than worry about going to the next step, I don’t think about it at all, at least for now. If I do, the pressure and burden makes me very stressed. How can I have fun as I work? But I already know the answer to that. My worry right now is not the script I get when I go to my schedules that day. It’s gotten much simpler lately. My only worry is that I have to do well. It’s a lot better. Really, doing that and memorizing just doesn’t allow you to have fun. The moment I had fun working was the moment my work went well. In the ‘I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better’ days, all I did was worry so it was really difficult for me but now it’s different from the start. Even when I fall I go ‘(happily) Ah it’s so fun!’ and when I cry I go ‘(happily) Ah It’s so fun!’ Because I’m like this, people think I’m slow. They think I’m slow because I have so much fun. Even when I’m in a serious situation, it’s just so funny to me.. What makes it worse are the people who dance when I go do radio shows. There should be videos if you go look for it. Things like when I went to Noh Hongchul’s radio. That’s why worries and thoughts shouldn’t appear. It should only appear because of the people already there (laughter) You just go Ah~ So embarrassing~. Well, because it’s not something you have to be too serious about. It’s fun.

Q: [Asking G.NA] Hm…. Singers you like?? Unnie I’m a big fan!!

A: I really like my seniors Yoon Mirae and Park Junghyun. I also enjoy listening to Christina Aguilera and Tamia. I listen to who I listen to and like who I like.

(Are there any singers you would like to feature in your songs?)

There are. Women. Seniors Yoon Mirae and Park Junghyun. I hope that once I’m on the same level that I can work with them. I mean, I have worked with seniors Rain and Wheesung and those opportunities will never fade from my heart. I’m always so thankful. But it was really all from the company’s efforts… I hope that one day when I’m on the same level as them, I can work with seniors Park Junghyun and Yoon Mirae.

Q: [Asking G.NA] Please introduce your new follow-up track ‘I Miss You Already’~ I love this song so much that I put it as my phone ringtone! ^^

A: I feel the lyrics of ‘I Miss You Already’ match well with me. You see, they are lyrics that many women can relate to. They are words that can be used in everyday life and something about the lyrics makes this ballad sad yet sweet. I could sing a normal ballad that was just sad or sad and bitter, but I feel this ballad is in the middle of all that range. You may not feel very sad but at the climax, you end up just letting out all your honest feelings. A woman’s heart is like that. Like that feeling where you try to maintain your dignity so you don’t betray any feelings but feel crushed in the end? But sadly, at the end (while singing) just one day, by my side. It ends like this, you see. But I feel that this measure leaves a lingering imagery at the end. It comes out in the end with the accompaniment. I was the one who requested that part to the producer. Even with ballads, (verse - chorus - verse - chorus - depart) I want to go right over it. I want to make people curious about my heart. But luckily, people heard it the way I wanted them to. My facial expression isn’t depressed but the song seems sad, the accompaniment in itself is sad but I’m smiling. But once you know the lyrics and grasp the true meaning, smiling is all I can really do. It’s not oh I have to put on a fake frown, I have to be depressed but more like when you think about the lyrics, your facial expression comes along with it. Later on, after about three to four broadcasts, people started to acknowledge that and I’m thankful for that. They know I’m not some weird person (laughter). What I’m trying to express won’t be interpreted the same by everybody. Their interpretation of meaning just can’t be the same with each and every person. That’s why I sat down with lyricist Han Seungjin and told him about all my experiences. We used the same system we used for ‘I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better.’ ‘I Miss You Already’ was last song on the album. He fixed my pronunciation of certain words, wrote again and again and if you look at it one way, it was a song that a lot of effort and time went into. Because of all the effort put in, I hope you listen to the song well.

(Should we say that this is your first time promoting with a ballad? How does that sound?)

This is the first time. Last year, when I debuted, I sang part of ‘There’s A Rumor’ then ‘I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better.’ But I only sang one-minute portions of ‘There’s A Rumor.’ This time, I have to sing the entirety of the song so it was a little burdensome. And with ‘Black & White’ I promoted with my hair up in a ponytail and looked different, so I felt people might be irked but there were many people who took it well. I think I’ll have to push straight through. ^^ To be honest, I enjoy listening to ballads more than dance songs. I usually enjoy ballads or R&B that makes me feel more comfortable. ‘Black & White’ was a style that I wanted to try out. If I come out stronger, I want to try rock later on as well. Because I’m very greedy and want to try out many different styles, I feel that it’ll be difficult to come out with a second, third or fourth album. As the general process of making an album starts and progresses, people ask things like ‘What’s the concept?’ or ‘What’s your style?’ I really don’t have an answer for them. The reason why is that I am still a rookie and maybe because I’m a rookie, the concept for the next album is made through the album currently in the making. I don’t know if you’ve all listened to the whole of my album, from number one to number 10, each song is different. They’re all different starting from the genre and style to the lyrics. Many well-known people have participated in this album but starting from the feel of the lyrics to the expression of those lyrics are different with each person. Other examples of differences in style are songs with electric sound. There are sweet songs like ‘What I Would Do If I Had A Lover’ and then there are songs that give off more of a trot feel. I wanted to try out styles like that because I have to try to actually know. I want a style that arouses good reactions and when people listen to it, they say this matches G.NA the best. I feel that there isn’t a more accurate judge than the public. Interestingly, people upload things like that on a daily basis and say what they think matches me better and what does not, music-wise. It’s really fun to see all their points of view. You can really only try these things when you’re a rookie so that’s part of the charm of being one. The reason why is that later on, if there’s a time for a third or fourth album… although there should be one.. (laughter) At that point, there are more things I have to worry about. For example, I’m going to have to get married (laughter) Although I do have to do those things, what’s more important is that before I do all that, I have to make a base for myself. If the base isn’t firm, then it becomes extremely uncertain because collapsing as you rise is a problem that comes as time goes on. What I want is to set a solid base, even if it takes a bit of time to make. That’s why ‘I Miss You Already’ is that kind of song.
